Those Poor Rich People

Psalm 49:11 “Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.”

It is ironic how some men greatly desire to leave a lasting impression, but refuse to lay hold on eternal life.

Men will name their companies, ranches and properties, even their ministries after themselves, and even write their own autobiography in order to secure some sense of immortality. They want their name to live on, after they pass on. Some men will build entire empires, others will build a monolithic business that transcends generations. What is it that drives that kind of person?

In Psalm 49 David points out that it can be a source of discouragement for those who seek after the Lord, when they see worldly people prosper.

Psalm 49:16-17 “Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased; For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.”

Jeremiah asked a similar question inĀ Jeremiah 12:1 “Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously?”

Remember, eternal life can only be gained one way, by grace through faith in Christ alone. For those who have been born again, we are far richer than we realize. Someday the fullness of God’s grace will be revealed to us in Heaven, but for now, the world marches on.

Psalm 49:20 “Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.”

Romans 11:33 “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!”
